The I-REC Standard mentioned in GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance document

22 January 2015

The recently published GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance document has mentioned the I-REC Standard as a voluntary instrument that can be used for corporate accounting of indirect carbon emissions.

On page 86 of the guidance the I-REC Standard is presented as a voluntary consumer program, similar to the voluntary US RECs market or national guarantee of origin markets in Europe. The report explains that, “Globally, The International REC Standard creates standardized attribute tracking certificates for the purposes of voluntary corporate disclosure. The legislative basis for the certificate issuance may be different in each country where the standard is active.”
